The 48th National Guard Brigade honored their fallen comrades in a special way.
The brigade commissioned a painting to commemorate the service and sacrifices of the unit while in Afghanistan.
During the tour of duty, eight soldiers lost their lives and 49 others were wounded.
Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Hurndon says the painting is dedicated to those who bravely served their country.
He says, "This painting depicts just one of the many
epic battles which is an ambush set up by Taliban forces. Our soldiers
are reacting to that, regaining the initiative, and also defeating the
enemy on the battlefield."
The unveiling brought together servicemen and women along with the families of fallen soldiers.
Latoya French, who lost her brother, Staff Sgt. Alex French, says, "It kind of puts a picture in my mind of what went on over there. We don't have a clue what they went through in Afghanistan sacrificing their lives for us to keep us free and safe."
The families of the eight fallen soldiers will each receive a framed copy of the painting.
