At Macon Memorial Park, people dedicated a memorial to the Macon Volunteers, and fallen soldiers of the 48th Infantry Brigade.

The memorial recognizes past and present Volunteers and the military involvements they've had.

The Volunteers' roots are pre-Civil War, and today the unit is known as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 48th Brigade Combat Team.

Colonel John King, commander of the 48th, says Thursday's event ties together veterans from all time periods.

"We have generation after generation of Macon Volunteers," King says. "This is just a snapshot, and every year there's just a renewal of that tradition."

Harold Carlisle with the Macon Volunteers Board of Trustees also says he's proud of the memorial and what it stands for.

He says it took about a year and $8,000 to complete, and was finished just in time for this Veterans Day.

Singing the National Anthem at the dedication, Jennifer Brewer says her husband's recent return from his first-ever deployment made her identify with the holiday even more.

Her husband Matt Brewer is the chaplain for the 48th Brigade, and returned in April after 14 months in Afghanistan.

"We had a 7-month-old, as well as our other children. It was hard to explain to them where daddy was, and why he was gone," she says.

That anxiety, Brewer says, was coupled with a very different sentiment, which made the parting more bearable.

"It was a pleasure to be able to say that he was serving our country," says Brewer.

The family says they're glad to cherish their freedoms together this Veterans Day, alongside others who understand and appreciate the sacrifice.

"Our children are very proud that their daddy is serving," Brewer says.
