Two Bibb deputies suspended after woman reports sexual assault
Two Bibb County deputies are suspended after a woman claimed that one of them sexually assaulted her.
According to a news release from the sheriff's office, it allegedly happened Sunday night at the Macon Inn on Riverside Drive.
Lt. Randy Gonzalez said the woman said that Deputy James Stiles assaulted her after taking her to a room at the inn.
"Exactly what happened inside the hotel room, we certainly don't have any video of that," Bibb Sheriff David Davis said. "We do have some statements from the individuals that were in the room that helps us with the investigation."
Stiles had worked on an off-duty job that night but was in uniform and driving a his patrol car, according to the news release.
Early Monday, the woman reportedly called 911, and Deputy Tabitha Costello went to the hotel and talked to her but did not file an incident report.
The sheriff's office says internal affairs is investigating why Costello failed to follow through in reporting the alleged incident. The GBI is also investigating the case.
"Any wrongdoing by any of the deputies, they're going to be held accountable," Davis said. "It's a troubling situation, but once our command staff was alerted to it, they immediately fell into our protocols."
According to Gonzalez, both Stiles and Costello are suspended with pay, but neither has been charged.
"We certainly don't want our deputies acting inappropriately to anybody, especially a female who is in need of protection and service," Davis said.
