Siemer Scores Game-Winning Goal in Mayhem's 5-4 Win Over Knoxville
MACON, GA- John Siemer scored the game-winning goal late in the third period, as the Macon Mayhem survived to defeat the Knoxville Ice Bears 5-4 at home.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Three goals were exchanged in the first period of the game, as Knoxville tallied two goals to Macon’s one. Ice Bears forward Dean Yakura started the scoring, as the fired a shot past Mayhem goaltender Charlie Finn on a two-on-one. The Mayhem answered, however, as Stephen Pierog escaped the corner with the puck and scored in the top corner. Knoxville re-took the lead when Josh Erickson found the puck through traffic and buried the rebound.
The two teams continued to exchange goals, as each team scored a power play goal in the second period. Daniel Echeverri tied the game, assisted by Daniel Gentzler and Ryan Salkeld, but Tommy Kelley answered to give Knoxville the lead once again.
Three unanswered goals to start the third period helped the Mayhem pull out the victory. Stathis Soumelidis began the scoring, assisted by Vinny Muto and Darren McCormick. Just minutes later, Pierog picked up his second goal of the night when he followed his own shot and poked the rebound home. John Siemer added some insurance, as he collected a stretch pass from Jeff Sanders and fired the wrist shot home. Knoxville made it interesting with just over a minute left, as Erickson scored his second goal of the game to make it 5-4. That was all the Mayhem allowed, however, as they hung on to win 5-4.
Charlie Finn picked up the win tonight and moves to 4-2-0 on the season. He made 27 saves on 31 shot attempts from Knoxville. The Mayhem reached the 40-shot plateau for the first time since their 5-1 win over the Birmingham Bulls on November 11, as they outshot the Ice Bears 40-31 tonight.
Both Stephen Pierog and Stathis Soumelidis stretched their current point streaks to five games tonight. Pierog scored two goals, while Soumelidis scored one goal and tallied two assists.
11 different players recorded a point for the Mayhem tonight, while Soumelidis, Pierog, and Vinny Muto recorded multiple points. Muto assisted on two goals in his first multi-point game of the season.
