HELLO EVERYONE AND THANKS FOR JOINING US.
I'M LEAH JOHNSON..
AND I'M FRANK MALLOY..THIS IS EYEWITNESS NEWS AT SIX.
260 EMPLOYEES AT ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE HAD UNTIL FIVE THIS AFTERNOON... TO DECIDE ON A BUY-OUT PACKAGE... TO RETIRE OR LEAVE THE JOB EARLY.
THE INCENTIVES ARE PART OF THE AIR FORCE'S INITIATIVE TO CUT 9-THOUSAND JOBS.... 516 OF THEM AT ROBINS.
LORRA LYNCH JONES TALKED WITH ONE OF THE 200 PEOPLE WHO TOOK THE OFFER.
63-YEAR-OLD GARY DELOZIER HAS A KNACK FOR NUMBERS.
HE'S THE BUDGET GUY FOR THE 78TH AIR BASE MISSON SUPPORT SQuADRON... AND HE'S COUNTED ELEVEN YEARS HERE.... 23 WORKING FOR THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.
Gary Delozier: (48:14) "I've been promoted through the years, like I said, it's been good."
BUT NOW INSTEAD OF STRIKING OFF LINE ITEMS... HE'S MARKING DOWN THE DAYS TO RETIREMENT... AN EARLIER ONE THAN HE ORIGINALLY CALCULATED.
Gary Delozier: (50:42) "The $25,000 bonus. I might as well get that."
HE CRUNCHED THE FIGURES... AND DETERMINED THE BUY OUT... WOULD BE IN HIS BOTTOM LINE'S BEST INTEREST.
Lorra Lynch Jones, EWN: (4:45) "Base spokesman John Birdsong says Delozier and all of the other 259 people who recieved the early retirement this round, requested them. That will also be the case in January when the second round goes out."
(file video) ROBINS NEEDS A TOTAL OF 516 PEOPLE TO ACCEPT THE EARLY OUTS... ALTHOUGH MORE WILL BE OFFERED. IF THEY DON'T GET ENOUGH EMPLOYEES TO ACCEPT... MANDATORY JOB CUTS COULD HAPPEN.
Gary Delozier, Warner Robins: (52:36) "I think most people who have accepted the offer are happy to have taken it. Some were offered and didn't take it. They decided to continue federal service."
DELOZIER'S LOOKING FORWARD TO HIS DECEMBER 31ST FINISH LINE.
(59:10) "I have a countdown list."
BUT IT'S NOT JUST FOR RETIREMENT.
IN 16 DAYS... HIS SON COMES HOME FROM SERVICE IN AFGHANISTAN.
(58:59) "That's the first time I'll get to see him when he gets back."
HE'S COUNTING DOWN THE HOURS... BUDGETING A SURPLUS OF TIME FOR FAMILY AFTER HIS FINAL DAYS AT ROBINS.
STD>> WARNER ROBINS A-L-C COMMANDER MAJOR GENERAL BOB MCMAHON WILL JOIN US LIVE IN THE STUDIO TOMORROW ON EYEWITNESS NEWS MORNIN'.
HE'LL TALK WITH STEPHANIE SUSSKIND ABOUT HOW THINGS ARE GOING AT THE BASE SINCE CUTS WERE ANNOUNCED LAST WEEK.. WHAT'S NEXT AT ROBINS.. AND THE IMPORTANCE OF VETERANS DAY.
THAT'S TOMORROW AT 6:30 A-M ON EYEWITNESS NEWS MORNIN'.
TONIGHT... THE BIBB COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION WILL MEET TO DISCUSS A LAWSUIT AGAINST THE DISTRICT.
AMY AUBERT SHOWS YOU WHY ONE FATHER SAYS THE DISTRICT SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE PROACTIVE.
<<Amy Aubert, Eyewitness News: "In tonight's meeting, the Bibb County Board of Education plans to talk about a settlement agreement for the lawsuit. The 13 page suit that I have here accuses the Bibb County School District of failing to prevent a student from sexually assaulting another at Northeast High School. The victim's father filed the lawsuit which says in May of 2008, then 18-year-old Ikeia Phillips assaulted and quote forcebly raped the mentally handicapped minor. Last year, Phillips pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, with intent to commit rape. The suit says no school employees were in the room when the alleged assault happened, but it says other students were. It also says no one helped the victim. According to the suit, the district didn't notify the victim's family until a day later. I spoke to a family member who says the victim's father was meeting with their lawyer before the Board of Education meeting. In Macon, I'm Amy Aubert, 13WMAZ, Eyewitness News.>> THE SCHOOL DISTRICT...AND ITS ATTORNEYS....DID NOT RETURN OUR PHONE CALLS TODAY.
13WMAZ'S BRITTINY BARBER IS AT THAT MEETING... AND WILL HAVE MORE ON ON EYEWITNESS NEWS AT 11 AND 13 WMAZ DOT COM.
PEOPLE IN BIBB COUNTY CONTINUED TO TALK TODAY...ABOUT WHETHER VOTERS SHOULD GET THEIR SAY ON MERGING THE CITY ANC COUNTY.
YESTERDAY.... STATE REPRESENTATIVE ALAN PEAKE DISCUSSED THE IDEA OF PASSING A MACON-BIBB CONSOLIDATION PACKAGE THROUGH THE LEGISLATURE...WITHOUT A VOTE BY THE GENERAL PUBLIC.
BIBB COUNTY CHAIRMAN SAM HART SAYS THAT GIVES HIM SOME HESITATION.
BUT HE SAYS HE'LL ULTIMATLY SUPPORT WHATEVER ROUTE LAWMAKERS TAKE.
COUNTY COMMISSIONER BERT BIVINS HOWEVER SAYS HE CAN'T GET BEHIND CONSOLIDIATION... UNLESS THE PUBLIC HAS THE FINAL SAY.
Sam Hart:"It's a different day, it's a new group and new efforts and new energies in Macon. And I certainly would be willing to listen to whatever is in the referendum. I think for me, it would be important in terms of what they're proposing, and how much local involvement there will be in determining, some of the items."
Bert Bivins:"Does anybody have something they want to do that they know the public won't like? So if you're going to do something that you intend to satify the public then why not have the referendum?
YESTERDAY ON EYEWITNESS NEWS AT SIX... PEAKE SAID PASSING CONSOLIDATION WITHOUT A BALLOT QUESTION WOULD BE FASTER AND MORE EFFICENT.
HE ALSO NOTED THAT THE DELEGATION ISN'T REQUIRED TO PUT IT ON A BALLOT.
BUT HOW DO THE VOTERS FEEL?
WE SPOKE TO SOME IN BIBB COUNTY TODAY... WHO SAY THEY WANT LAW MAKERS TO JUST GET IT DONE.
BUT OTHERS... SAY THEY WANT TO CAST THEIR BALLOT.
Claire Swain: "Obviously, I live in the city so I like the idea. But there are probably a lot of people in the county that want to be able to weigh in on whether or not it's a good idea."
Ann Hanse: "If the legistature does it, I think it will get done. And that's better than what we've had in the last twenty years."
Lori Obenauf:"I would support that only because we've been discussing consolidation for at elast thirty years, which I'm aware and it's time to do something. It didn't take Columbus thirty years to get it done, it didn't take Augusta or Athens thirty years to get it done. Macon and Bibb County seems to be stuck in a quagmire.
Betty Vann Collins: "I think everybody needs to express their own opinion and at least indicate what they want. Win or lose."
Glynn Obenauf"It's entirely up to the people and every time it has come to a vote, it's been voted down. So I'm just, don't see why we need to go through that again."
IF LAWMAKERS DECIDE TO MOVE FORWARD WITH THE PLAN... PEAKE SAYS A CONSOLIDATED GOVERNMENT WOULD LIKELY BE ELECTED IN 2014.
THE WHITE HOUSE SAYS PRESIDENT OBAMA'S THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS ARE WITH THE VICTIMS OF ALLEGED CHILD SEX-ABUSE AT PENN STATE UNIVERSITY.
WHITE HOUSE SPOKESMAN JAY CARNEY SAYS THEY WON'T GET INTO THE DETAILS OF THE SCHOOL'S DECISION TO FIRE FOOTBALL COACH JOE PATERNO AND FORCE THE SCHOOL'S PRESIDENT TO RESIGN.
CARNEY SAYS THAT IF THE ALLEGATIONS INVOLVING A FORMER ASSISTANT COACH ARE TRUE... THEN... QUOTE... "WHAT HAPPENED IS OUTRAGEOUS."
THE PENN STATE SCANDAL HAS SPARKED STRONG REACTIONS FROM SOME OF OUR FACEBOOK FANS.
STEVE COMMENTED... "SUCH A BAD ENDING FOR A GREAT COACH."
SHELTON WROTE... "THIS IS A TESTAMENT THAT NO ONE WILL STAND AND SEE CHILDREN EXPLOITED. THIS IS A SAD SITUATION BUT IN THE END SENDS A STRONG MESSAGE THAT YOUR POSITION DOESN'T EXCLUDE YOU FROM ACCOUNTABILITY.
THEY HAD A DUTY TO PROTECT THOSE WHO CAN'T PROTECT THEMSELVES. SAD BUT NECESSARY!"
MICHAEL REPLIED... "WHILE YES, HE DID "REPORT IT", HE DID NOT FOLLOW UP TO "MAKE SURE" THAT "PROPER ACTION" WAS TAKEN. IF HE HAD OF DONE THAT, IT'S CONCEIVABLE THAT MANY OF THESE DETESTABLE INCIDENTS COULD'VE BEEN PREVENTED.
A CAPTAIN IS "ULTIMATELY RESPONSIBLE" FOR HIS SHIP. JOE PATERNO WAS THE CAPTAIN OF THIS SHIP."
AND ROSE COMMENTED... "I FEEL STRONGLY THAT NO PUNISHMENT IS TOO HARSH FOR CHILD MOLESTERS AND ABUSERS AND THAT NO CASE DESERVES TO BE COVERED UP.
BUT IT SADDENS ME THAT PATERNO'S ILLUSTRIOUS CAREER IS FOREVER MARRED BY HIS INEXPLICABLE LAPSE OF MORAL FORTITUDE.
