THIS YOUNG TREE WILL NEED A LOTS OF CARE BEFORE IT YIELDS A SINGLE PECAN.
Duke Lane, Jr. President, Lane Southern Orchards:04:08 We'll be working on this young tree, pruning and fertilizing and watering it for six or seven more years before we start getting nuts off of it.
DUKE LANE JUNIOR...OF LANE SOUTHERN ORCHARDS...SAYS THESE GROWING PECANS WILL GO ALL OVER THE WORLD.
Duke Lane, Jr. President, Lane Southern Orchards:01:55 3rdclip The demand from global markets, particularly China, is got us in a situation where we're seeing more of a demand than we're seeing a supply
THAT HAS THIEVES SEEING LOTS OF GREEN.
Duke Lane, Jr. President, Lane Southern Orchards: 02:00 We're seeing prices here in the last two or three years in excess of a dollar, a dollar and a half more than what we saw, you know five or six years ago.
THAT COMES TO THREE DOLLARS A POUND....OR MORE. LANE SAYS DURING FALL HARBEST...THIEVES...COME ONTO ORCHARDS...AFTER A TREE HAS BEEN SHAKEN DOWN.
Duke Lane, Jr. President, Lane Southern Orchards:06:13 We don't know how much money we're losing I mean it's hard to really put a price on that. I have seen times when we check a tree and the ground is covered with nuts and I would leave that night about dark and come back the next day and say you know these nuts were on this ground and I'm not seeing them so they went somewhere and they didn't get up and walk.
PEACH COUNTY SHERIFF TERRY DEESE SAYS THEY'VE SEEN A BIG SPIKE IN PECAN THEFT.
Sheriff Terry Deese, Peach County: 00:50 I would say this past year it's probably double what we'd normally see, I think we made around 30 arrests for stealing pecans.
WHICH IS WHY GEORGIA PECAN GROWERS WANT TO COME UP WITH SOLUTIONS THURSDAY .
Duke Lane, Jr. President, Lane Southern Orchards:07:15 They've got a good start in the Albany area where the pecan region of growers like I say paid them to patrol orchards 24 hour a days.
