The new Peach Regional Medical Center hospital Byron is set be completed by this summer.
And a new luxury apartment complex...just yards away from the new hospital's site...could start construction soon.
It will be set on 20 acres...and will be called Hawk's Ridge.
Developer Ben Jones...says they did a market study on Peach...and determined there was a need for a project like this.
Jones says they will build 172 units of one...two...and three bedroom apartments.
The prices for a unit haven't been determined yet...but the project will cost up to 16 million dollars.
Some of the amenities will include a tennis court...pool...and dog park.
<Ben Jones, Developer: We considered a few spots in this area, um obviously with the new construction of Peach County Regional Medical Center, we thought this would be a great fit >
Jones says they plan to start construction in the next three months and he hopes they can finish the project within 15 months.
The Red Cross is known for keeping people safe and helping others when the worst happens ... But now, *they're* asking for help ... And as Tom George found, it's help the group's leaders say is needed desperately.
<this is what we hand out during the floods and things>
When disaster strikes, they drop everything and go...
< We go to house fires and help the victims, make sure they have a place to stay and food and clothes and we support the firemen and all the other volunteers. >
They were quick to respond to last month's downtown fire in Eastman, that destroyed two businesses ... And to the fatal wreck on I-16... But it's a tough job for the American Red Cross crew based in Laurens County ... When they're sent to disasters in smaller rural counties, they often have no little to no help
< On average there are at least two to three fires a week, and these guys between training and having to go out, they are being run to pieces. >
< Now in disaster situations, trucks like this are crucial for getting people the food and resources they need, but depending on where you live, if there's no volunteers or more of these trucks, it could be a few hours before it even gets there. >
In fact, 13 Middle Georgia counties -- Baldwin, Bleckley, Hancock, Jones, Monroe, Peach, Putnam, Taylor, Telfair, Treutlen, Twiggs, Washington, and Wilkinson all have zero volunteers. Others, like Bibb are short too.
< We need more in each and every one of our 22 counties, I mean we're desperate. >
But although, they're stretched thin, it's still a labor of love for those volunteers hard at work.
< I just get a blessing out of helping people...>
< And they come up and they hug you and they tell you thank you for being a bright point in their disaster and when you know you're giving back to your community, that's best part. >
