A downtown Macon brewery is taking its beer to the next level.
Piedmont Brewery and Kitchen says it is the first brewery in central Georgia to begin canning its beer.
Owner Brian Whitley personally cans each beer, which is brewed in the basement of the Third Street brewery.
He says there's been a big movement in craft beer over the last four or five years to switch from glass bottles and growlers to cans.
The cans are less expensive, easy to recycle and stay fresh longer than beer stored in growlers and other containers.
"You can take them down the river. You can take them to the beach. You can take them to the mountains. They're a lot lighter than glass and from a growler standpoint, you don't have to worry about lugging your growler around anymore," Whitley said. "You can walk in and buy a can that was canned at our facility.
Whitley says he's sold 120 cans of beer since he began selling them last Tuesday, which is more beer than they sold in growlers during their first four months of business.
