A few strong to severe storms are possible this afternoon and this evening across central Georgia. Overall the threat is low, but the SPC has placed us in the “marginal” (level 1 of 5) threat for severe weather.

The main threat for this afternoon and evening appears to be the potential for gusty straight line winds. In addition some small hail is possible. The tornado threat appears to be low at this time, but is not completely zero, so a brief spin-up tornado cannot be ruled out.

As far as the timing, we’re expecting an area of rain to move in to our western counties around 1 PM or so this afternoon.

Initially it appears that the severe threat is very low, but as the rain progresses eastward and we approach the peak heating of the afternoon it’s possible that we could build enough instability for a few storms to go strong or severe.

The threat will gradually expand eastward through the later afternoon and evening hours. The general time frame for any potentially strong storms this afternoon is about 1 PM to 11 PM.
