Bibb County Commissioner Elaine Lucas is pushing the county to ban alcoholic beverages in Rosa Parks Square. Lucas is sponsoring an ordinance that would not allow people to consume or sell alcohol in the historic park.
This comes two weeks after former Macon Mayor C. Jack Ellis, led a protest against a beer festival that was happening in the park.
Lucas says a group that Ellis is a part of is asking the county to make changes to the park. One of those changes is banning alcohol.
“He’s requested that we make sure that that’s always a place of dignity, of serenity, of peace, of only wholesome type things going on,” says Lucas.
She says over the past couple of years, the park has been the site of several beer festivals, and she says a lot of people do not feel that those events are appropriate for the park "because of who the park is named for and because of the high esteem that people hold for Rosa Parks,” says Lucas.
Commissioners are planning to vote on the ordinance at Tuesday’s committee meeting.
