A Bleckley County grand jury indicted a teacher on a charge of child cruelty earlier in July.

According to the indictment from July 10, 40-year-old Mary Jamye Phelps, of Cochran, allegedly caused cruel and excessive pain to a female student when she slammed her to the floor, put her full body weight on the student, and held her by the shoulder and wrist in November 2015.

Oconee Judicial Circuit DA Tim Vaughn said the indictment and charges were the result of a monthslong investigation into Phelps.

He said the victim, whose name is being withheld because she is a minor, was one of Phelps’ students and the alleged incident happened at the primary school.

Phelps is charged with 2nd degree cruelty to children.
