The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has an open criminal investigation involving the Twiggs County magistrate office over missing funds.

Special Agent in Charge J.T. Ricketson says the GBI has asked for a forensic audit to be done on all books and accounts involving the magistrate office.

He says they are awaiting the results of the audit and it should be completed in the coming weeks.

Ricketson says if the audit returned and found something, it would be considered embezzlement since the office has a legal authority and the public money cannot be used for personal reasons.

At this time, no arrests have been made and no persons of interest were named.

The magistrate office could not be reached for comment.
