Hawkinsville family asking for community's support after son suddenly dies

The family has started a YouCaring account to raise money for the funeral that is quickly approaching.

We first met Samuel Porter in 2016 when his son Lathadious Porter was shot five times. Porter says he was told his son would not live, but after some sacrifices and hundreds of dollars later, there was hope.

Earlier this week, almost two years after the shooting, Porter's life took a sharp turn.

"She helps him get up so he can get his composure. Five minutes after that, the ambulance was here and there was no life in him," Samuel Porter said.

Even though Lathadious Porter was lifeless, his dad tried to save him.

"I just pumped and pumped for 12 miles, and, you know, just hoping and praying," Samuel Porter said.

During the ride to the hospital, Porter prayed his son, who has a daughter of his own, would just hold on.

"I was saying in my prayers, 'My family is going to hurt if you leave us,'" Samuel Porter said.

The Porter family says they lost a loving and caring man, remembering him for things he loved like football.

Now the family is trying to bury their son this week, but don't have the funds to do so, so they started a YouCaring account to raise money, but for now, the family is leaning on God and one another.

"Crazy, goofy -- he dares if you don't expect him to be there, he would be there," Lathadious Porter's sister Traneice Porter-Hylton said.

The family is also working on continuing an anti-violence event to prevent gun violence among teens.
