H&H founder and adopted matriarch of Allman Brothers Mama Louise Hudson dies at the age of 93

She was surrounded by family according to Macon-Bibb Coroner Leon Jones.

MACON, Ga. — Mama Louise Hudson, one of the original owners of H&H Restaurant and the adopted Matriarch of the Allman Brothers Band family, died at the age of 93 on Tuesday, according to Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones.

Hudson died in hospice care surrounded by her family. Hudson was the co-owner of the H&H Cafeteria with Inez Hill, who died in December 2007. Mama Louise often fed members of the Allman Brother’s Band before the group reached stardom and had little money to their name.

This led to a lifelong friendship between her and the band as well as several other Capricorn recording artists. Members of various famous bands frequented the H&H restaurant located on Cotton Avenue.

In 2017, Mama Louise spoke with 13WMAZ about her relationship with the Allman Brother’s after the death of Gregg Allman.

“They came on in. They were hungry, so I fed them, and I just got to be their mama. I enjoyed them boys,” said Mama Louise. “We turned out to be a family.”

Hudson sold her famous restaurant a few years ago, but many of her recipes are still used there. She is part of the mural outside of the restaurant.

Earlier this year, Mayor Lester Miller honored her by proclaiming Feb. 11 as “Mama Louise Hudson Day.” in Macon.

This is the second member of the Allman Brother’s extended family to die in 2022. Earlier this year, Gregg’s best friend Chank Middleton died. The remaining members of the original lineup for the band include Jaimoe Johnson and Dickey Betts.

Mama Louise Hudson was 93 years old.
