Some students start school as early as next week.
The Houston County Housing Authority wanted to get them off to a good start.
They gave away 5,000 backpacks Friday.
Hundreds of Houston County students walked to McConnell-Talbert stadium where volunteers handed children tickets.
That ticket gave students the opportunity to pick up a book bag, paper, and some other school supplies.
11-year-old Gillian Johnson says she's ready to start 6th grade at Bonaire Middle school.
"I have two notebooks and a guide," said Johnson.
CEO for the Houston County Housing Authority, Sheryl Frazier says the organization started handing out 250 backpacks in 2009.
Frazier says that this couldn't happen without sponsors and agencies helping out.
"Everybody has a book bag, everybody has paper, and pencil," said Frazier. "We're not saying that it's going to last them for the rest of the year, but they get to start out in the same place, which is important."
