'I think they'll put on a bit of a show': Cherry Blossom trees look promising this year

Last year's warmer winter followed by the March freeze stopped the Cherry Blossom trees from thriving. This year, the weather isn't quite giving the trees the cold shoulder.

Landscapers dig up the dirt so they can lay down new cherry blossom trees.

"It's a great planting day, actually -- the colder, the better," Gary Wilson from TGW Garden Design said.

But not last year's kind of cold. Wilson is leading the cherry blossom trail project this year, a project that he remembers getting the cold shoulder in 2017.

"About a week ago this time last year, meaning that around the beginning of March, we had about a 20-degree freeze, and that just took care of everything, " Wilson said.

But, this year, Wilson is putting the worry of weather behind, taking out the old, and putting in the new.

"It's like the changing of the guard," Wilson said.

According to Wilson and Kathy Hensley from the Bibb County-UGA extension, 15 years is the typical lifespan of a cherry blossom tree.

But it wasn't old age that kept many trees from blooming on time last year.

"Without a doubt, it was the weather last year, " Wilson said.

Kathy Hensley says this winter was much better for the pretty pink flowers.

"We've had plenty of chill hours this year," Hensley continued, "Because last year, we didn't have enough, and so we had that sporadic bloom, so some of the trees were confused and didn't know what to do."

Now, back on track, the buds on the trees will keep the flowers protected from this week's possible below freezing temperatures.

"But I would expect after that, when the weather starts to warm up, that we would see the blooms pop out," Hensley said.

The Cherry Blossom Capital of the World will be able to live up to its name.

"I think they'll put on a little bit of a show," Wilson said, smiling.

Hensley and Wilson say that the warmer temperatures would kick off the blooms, and a warm-up isn't out of the question as we head into the weekend.

Bottom line: It is possible we will see the flowers bloom just in time for the festival this year!

Cherry Blossom trees will also be available for purchase Monday-Friday after the festival kicks off at Lowe Lighting located at 1525 Forsyth Street from 9 a.m - 5 p.m.

The kickoff party for the festival will be Thursday, March 17th at 7 p.m. at Hargray Capitol Theater. The festival will officially run from the 16-25th.
