Macon's 48th Brigade is preparing for Hurricane Irma and to send more than 1,800 soldiers to southern Georgia counties.

The brigade's executive officer, Lt. Chris Powell, says they are sending soldiers to Cordele, Douglas, Valdosta, and Albany.

They will wait the storm out in those cities, and then head out to help with storm damage.

Powell says the missions will vary based on the damage, but he says they will most likely help clean up areas like roads.

“We have chainsaw teams that would go out and actually cut up the trees move them off the roadway to allow for local police and ems to get to persons in need,” said Powell.

Powell says depending on the damage, more soldiers could be sent to help out.
