A man is dead after being hit by a car at about 7 A.M. Wednesday on Mercer University Drive near Grosso Avenue.

It's the 6th pedestrian to be killed in Bibb County this year.

"There was a gray Chevy Trailblazer headed eastbound on Mercer," says Bibb County Sheriff's Deputy Clay Williams. "The pedestrian stepped out in front of the vehicle and was struck.

That man was 69-year-old Theodore Reese Jr., known as "the dog man." He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Efforts were attempted to revive him but it was unsuccessful," says Williams.

Reese lived on the corner of Grosso and Mercer University... and was known in the neighborhood for pushing a garbage can down the road with his pet dogs.

"He pushed that herbie-curbie and he collected cans all the time, day and night," says Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones.

Jones says Reese was hit just after 7 A.M. and was pronounced dead about 45 minutes later.

Jerry Wright knew Reese and talked with him a few hours before the accident.

"I drank coffee with him every morning, so you know I've been knowing him a long time, picking up his cans, you know. But, I don't know what happened, I saw him this morning," says Wright. "He left, you know, him and his dog. Next thing I know, this happened"

Bibb officials want pedestrians and drivers to use more caution in the early morning hours.

"We do ask that people pay attention when it is dark," says Williams. "It is hard to see a pedestrian when you are in a moving vehicle."

"You have to wear clothing that's visible to the motorists, use crosswalks, and be very careful," says Jones.

The driver, 20-year-old Chelsie Blevins of Thomaston, has not been charged and the case is still under investigation.
