Cinco de Mayo is Friday, which means Mexican restaurants are getting ready for one of their busiest days of the year. But what about people leaving restaurants and getting on the road and driving? The co-owner of The Margaritas at Mercer Village, Brad Cork, wants to make sure everyone gets home safe, even if it means driving them home.
“We'll give them a ride home or make sure they get safe travel from the restaurant,” says Cork. He says they want to make sure everyone gets home safely, not just on Cinco de Mayo, but every night.
“We started running a little shuttle service to the area hotels and over the years, it started to get a little bigger and we went out and bought a big new transit van that holds 18 people,” says Cork.
He says he will take people almost anywhere nearby to keep people from getting in the car and driving off after a few too many.
“We want to make sure that if people do have drinks or too much to drink that they get home safely,” says Cork. He says they also have their waiters and waitresses keep tabs.
“Normally, we just kind of keep an eye on how they act. If they're starting to slur their words or they don’t really know what’s going on and they're like, 'Oh, I forgot about you,’” says Alaina Langley. She is a waitress at the restaurant and says that is not a situation she comes across often.
However, when she does, she says the person normally is not alone.
“We'll have somebody in the group who just drinks water or sweet tea or something. They always have somebody in the group who’s the responsible person,” says Langley.
Even if everyone is drinking, Langley says they usually have a plan.
“I had one group of people who were like, ‘No, it's fine. We have an Uber coming,’” says Langley.
But if all else fails, Cork says he is happy to help.
“Anybody who feels like they may have had too much to drink, we'll give them a ride,” says Cork.
