Between a new skatepark and the Macon Bacon, Central City Park is growing with all sorts of new activities, but it is getting ready to expand even more with a new playground.

John Lechner says he is excited for a new playground, but not for the reason you may think.

“There’s a bunch of kids just out here just hanging around,” says Lechner.

Lechner says a lot of kids just hang around while their older siblings skate.

“It’s actually a pretty dangerous place for kids to be because you never know when one of us might slip up and a board goes flying. It’s actually pretty nerve-racking to skate watching all these little kids out here,” says Lechner.

It's a situation Jeremy Maritan says he knows all too well because of his little brother.

“He'll come in the way and ask questions and stuff like that,” says Maritan.

But Maritan says his brother's not the only one.

“Unless they want to walk all the way down there, which sometimes, their parents will be over here and they want to watch their other kids skate,” says Maritan. He says a playground next to the skatepark is a good idea.

“That’ll give them a place to play,” says Maritan.

The Director of Parks and Recreation, Robert Walker, says that is one of the main reasons they decided to put the playground towards the back of the park.

“It’s going to be about 5,000 square feet, and it’s going to have a two to 5-year-old area and a 5 to 12-year-old area,” says Walker.

Walker says the playgrounds in the park are 10 and 20 years old, so he says they want to give kids a new space to play.

“The exciting thing about this playground, it’s going to have swings, and we don't have swings in Central City Park at all right now,” says Walker.

Lechner says he thinks it will make the skatepark safer.

“I’d feel a lot less nervous,” says Lechner.

Walker says they are planning to start construction on the play area around January.
