UPDATE (2:47 p.m.) The two passengers have been identified as 18-year-old Tony Ponder of Jackson, and Robert King, 17, of Juliette, according to Lt. Brad Freeman at the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

According to Jackson Daniel, the executive director of business for Monroe County Schools, the deceased and two of the passengers are currently students at Mary Persons, and Ponder recently graduated.


18-year-old William Dustin Fischer of Forsyth was pronounced dead on the scene, after a single vehicle accident early Sunday morning. Fischer was a passenger in that car.

The driver, 18-year-old Michael L. Austin, and two other passengers, were transported by Monroe County EMS to Navicent Health in Macon with injuries.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to Hwy 42 South, just south of Montpelier Springs Road at approximately 1:42 a.m. Sunday morning.

The car had been traveling southbound when it left the roadway and struck an embankment, causing the vehicle to become airborne and hit multiple trees on the shoulder of the highway. The roadway was wet at the time of the accident.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office is still investigating the accident.
