People concerned after 18 car break-ins at Macon apartment complex

"This is not something that you pay rent for:" said Demarcus Watson after learning someone broke into two of his cars.

People living at a Macon apartment complex want answers after more than a dozen cars were broken into Monday morning. Around 2:30 a.m. Monday, Devin Gibbs says he saw someone breaking into cars at the Manchester at Wesleyan apartment complex.

"He was actually leaning into one of the windows, then he saw me and ran over to his car. He drove it off behind the dumpsters. At that point, he got back out as I was calling the police and broke into more cars," said Gibbs.

The Bibb County Sheriff's Office says at least 18 cars were broken into. Gibbs sent 13WMAZ pictures of several cars with broken windows. Demarcus Watson also lives at the apartment and says he has to spend $300 on his car windows.

"All the cars had windows busted. You can see my car has a window busted. The car next door has a window busted," said Watson.

The Bibb County Sheriff's Office says there are a few things to keep cars safe. To start, try hiding valuables somewhere hidden like a glove compartment, don't leave the car running unattended, and make sure it's locked.

Some of the car owners told 13WMAZ they have concerns about the complex gate staying open for weeks to months at a time.

"That gate probably would keep out unwanted visitors," said Gibbs.

Watson says the break-ins are an unwanted gift this holiday season.

"As tenants out here, we are not happy. This is not something that you pay rent for," said Watson.

Assistant manager Brittany Green with the apartment complex declined to comment.
