If you ever take Russell Parkway in Peach County, your commute will be changing a little bit. That is because Peach County just received a $1.4 million grant from the Georgia Toll Road Association to extend Russell Parkway.
The first phase includes adding a two-lane extension on Russell Parkway from Housers Mill Road to Lakeview Road.
"This will just make another easy way to get in and out of Peach County. You know, we have so many people headed toward Robins Air Force Base. It will just be a good way to get to our new hospital down there on John Sullivan,” says Peach County Chairman Martin Moseley.
Another phase of the $2.2-million project will connect Russell Parkway to Highway 49. Some drivers we spoke to in Byron said they think the project is a good way to alleviate traffic in that area.
"It's an outstanding thing because traffic is just gets so backed up coming from Macon and the air force base in Warner Robins. It gives people an easier route to go around. I think it's a great thing,” says Pervis Burden.
Others say the multi-million dollar Russell Parkway Extension Project will be a good thing for Peach County's economy.
"It's going to open up opportunities for people to build residents and they're also going to be able to build businesses like Jack's here. That'll bring revenue to the county and hopefully as their tax rates increase maybe they can lower their rates a little bit,” says Graham Jones.
It may be a long road ahead to get the extension project cruising but city leaders say it will have a large impact on the future of Peach County. Right now, the project is just in its design phase. The targeted completion date was December of this year, but Chairman Moseley says they are going to ask for a time extension.
A $1.4 million state grant will pay for a 1-mile extension of Russell Parkway in Peach County.
The grant is part of $82 million in Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank grants awarded Wednesday to cities and counties across the state.
The state plans a two-lane extension for Russell Parkway from its end at Housers Mill Road to Lakeview Road. That's about a mile.
According to the state, that's the first phase in a project that will eventually connect Russell Parkway to Highway 49.
The project is currently in its design phase, and Peach County is acquiring property for the right-of-way.
The total cost for Phase 1 is estimated at $2.2 million. The state estimates it could be completed by December.
