The United States Coast Guard takes to both the skies and the seas to fulfill their missions.
These heroes go unseen in Central Georgia, but in Savannah, they stand prepared to protect those near and far.
Travel to the east coast of Georgia to Hunter Air Force Base in Savannah, and you'll hear choppers fire up their engines, while crews prepare to step up as saviors of the sea.
Saviors, like Lieutenant Junior Grade Andrew Moravec, who know few limits.
"'Is this risk worth the gain?' and this particular night it was," Moravec said when talking about a mission he was called to when Hurricane Matthew horrified the coast.
But a hurricane wasn't going to stop Moravec and his crew from braving the seas.
"Because they did have fuel leaking into their boat, and knowing... not knowing when somebody else could come get them, was a pretty easier decipher whether or not we were going to be able to do the mission or not," Moravec said.
As a pilot, Moravec says he has gone beyond boundaries to save lives.
"We got a request from North Carolina to respond out of our normal area of responsibility to help two people that were aground on a boat who were being plagued by the winds and the seas."
"I had an extensive swimming background, so it was an opportunity to stay in the water," Newberg said.
He says now his victories aren't in the form of trophies, but something much more valuable.
"The most rewarding thing I feel that our job has is the opportunity to help people and make a difference in somebody's life, whether it's picking them up or just keeping them safe."
On Independence Day, we thank those that have served us, but Moravec says, he thanks the Coast Guard for what it has served him.
"To go from barely graduating high school to being a Coast Guard helicopter pilot, it's been pretty amazing," Moravec said.
Even if the lessons and missions keep families like Nathan Newberg's family on edge.
"My mom worries about me, but, overall, I think that they're pretty proud," Newberg said.
Overall, both men are proud to serve their country and the people in it, all to keep our freedom free.
