Honoring our military, Wreaths Across America was held Saturday at Riverside Cemetery in Macon.

Every year, volunteers place wreaths at the grave sites of fallen heroes.

Guest speaker Colonel Vice Commander John Verhage says the purpose of the event is not only to remember those who are no longer with us, but to honor those who are still active in the military today.

He says they also hope to teach children about the value of freedom.

"Always remember that freedom is not free. Freedom is the product of those we are here to honor who believed in something larger than themselves," Verhage said.

Verhage says it's the men and women who fought and continue to fight that help make the nation a better place.
