Warner Robins BBQ competition helping disabled veterans

The first annual Robins Flying High BBQ Festival will send all profits to disabled and veterans as well as families of veterans.

A Warner Robins barbecue event has City Hall and Watson Boulevard smelling delicious for a good cause.

The first annual Robins Flying High BBQ Festival brought in 28 barbecue competitors from across the state to park right next to City Hall.

The Georgia Barbecue Association competition works as part of a statewide competitive process to eventually crown an overall barbecue champion.

The Robins Flying High BBQ Festival will award its own winner who will get a set number of points in that overall statewide contest.

Local Vietnam War and disabled veteran Burl Jimmerson says he had the idea to bring a competition right here to central Georgia about six months ago.

He said he wanted to give all the profits to disabled and homeless veterans and families of veterans.

“Well I look around and I see homeless vets, I see single female veterans with children and a lot of organizations shy away a little bit,” Jimmerson said among the smokers and ribs.

Jimmerson served in the Air Force during Vietnam and retired from Robins Air Force Base in 2008.

He said he works with the Georgia Barbecue Association and decided to approach them about hosting an event in Warner Robins. Jimmerson was encouraged by the number of participants in its first year.

You can still visit the competition from 10am to 5pm next to Warner Robins City Hall.

Vendors are selling food, festival t-shirts, and raffling off a Bubba Grills smoker. All the profits will go to helping veterans.
