Wesleyan College is trying to set the record straight.

In January, some racist graffiti appeared on a dorm door, which sparked controversy for students.

Recently, the school put out a statement acknowledging that a history of racism including a connection with the term "Ku Klux Klan" runs deep through the school's history. They're reworking the school's website to better reflect that history.

President-elect Vivia Fowler says the "Ku Klux Klan" is the original name of a student group that is now called "the Pirates."

She says they are working toward racial reconciliation.

"So, as we faced issues of race on our campus and throughout the world, we recognize that there are parts of our story, parts of our history that are connected to race, racial injustice, things that need to be reconciled," Fowler said.

Fowler says current president Ruth Knox had one of the school's history professors begin researching the school's history in depth a couple of years ago. The research will be complete by the fall.
