Many Georgians called and emailed WMAZ asking how they can be a part of the solution to solve the problem of homelessness in Central Georgia. Gabrielle Dawkins visited three nonprofit groups to find specific ways you can help with time, money, or gifts.
Judy Sexton, the Director at Loaves and Fishes Ministry, says they've been busy through the holidays, handing out food and clothes to those in need.
“We use what we call street packs. They are just convenient food that anybody that needs them can come in and say, 'I'm on the streets and hungry,' and we hand them out,” says Sexton.
Sexton says without help from the volunteers, this would be difficult. Volunteers make up 75 percent of the labor at this nonprofit.
“It's very difficult to keep the doors open. The government used to have, fund day service centers, but they don't fund them anymore,” says Sexton.
Along with volunteers, the organization needs blankets, coats, and food items.
Loaves and Fishes is located at 651 Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, Macon, Ga. 31201. If you would like to volunteer, you can reach them at 478-741-1007.
The Salvation Army, located at 1925 Broadway in Macon, houses nearly 150 people at their facilities every night. Men’s Shelter Director Charles Pope says that donations like hygiene products make a huge impact.
“It's always good to have personal hygiene stuff, deodorant, soap, even for the women and children,” says Pope. “No one organization can deal with the homelessness in Macon, so if everybody would pull together, I think it would be better.”
You can contact the Salvation Army at 478-746-0755.
If you are more hands-on and would like to donate your time, you can throw on some gloves and serve food at Macon Outreach.
“We're always in need of people to help. You can maybe work in the serving line, you can clean tables,” says Debbie Towson, the Executive Director at Macon Outreach.
Towson says around 250 people rely on them for food daily Monday through Friday.
The Macon Outreach is located at 267 First Street in Macon. You can contact the church at 478-743-8026.
