What's in a name? The Middle Georgia Derby Demons explain their unique nicknames

The Middle Georgia Derby Demons is Middle Georgia's roller derby league, which started in 2011.

The Middle Georgia Derby Demons are preparing to return to the track for their 2018 season.

One unique aspect of the team is the creative names the members are given when they join. The members have names like Slaughter Melon, Trauma Splice and TopShelf LickHer.

Debi "Sweet Amnesia" Beckler says the names can come from anywhere.

"Everybody kind of picks something that feels good to them," Beckler said.

She added that her nickname was actually created by her husband.

"It was part of his favorite Gin Blossom song, just like a cute little lyric that he liked and I was like 'that sounds really cool and it sounds like if I hit somebody, she'll forget herself on the track," she explained about her nickname.

Lonnie "Slaughter Melon" Castellano says it all started with her helmet she wears to practice and games.

"I have a watermelon helmet and I tend to slaughter a lot of people on the track, so they named me Slaughter Melon," she said.

For Lyael "Jackie Jerkheart" Tesler, it started with That 70s Show. She's named after the character "Jackie Burkhart."

This season, the team is hosting a nine-week Roller Derby boot camp to train its new members. During the camp, which started this week, the team will teach "the basics" of the sport including skating, stopping and falling safely.

Meanwhile, the veterans of the team started gearing up in January to come back stronger than before.

This year's team captain, Esther "Kimchi Kollider" Lee-Altman says they have taken time to watch film to find areas of improvement.

The Middle Georgia Derby Demons league was founded in 2011 by a group of men and women looking to bring roller derby to Macon.
