The debate is real -- as in do you prefer a real Christmas tree or a fake one? Here are a few reasons why real ones are good for your health.
Not only does the smell of a real tree improve your mood, the tree itself also does a few good things for your home. Real Christmas trees have the ability to deodorize and purify the air in your home by absorbing toxins into the needles and bark.
In addition, a study out of Kansas State University found having a real tree can decrease your chances of getting a cold or the flu. The scent of pine has been found to protect against sinus infections and boosts the immune system.
The same study found that when you bring nature into the home whether it's a Christmas tree or plants or flowers, they can lower blood pressure and anxiety.
Live trees are great but unfortunately, there are some who are allergic to Christmas trees due to the mold than can carry -- it triggers hay fever.
However, there is still a chance for a real tree even if you are allergic but you’ll need to do a couple of things.
- Make sure the tree farm you buy it from puts it on the shaker for you.
- Blow off the rest of the debris at home with a leaf blower.
- Rinse down the tree with a garden hose.
- Let it dry someplace warm for at least two days before bringing it into the house.
Those steps are recommended to significantly reduce allergies.
