Student disciplined after posting 'whites only' on school water fountain

A picture of the signs quickly spread on social media.

ROSWELL, Ga. - A teen was disciplined after video surveillance footage revealed him posting racist signs on Roswell High School water fountains Thursday morning.

The principal of the school, Dr. Robert Shaw, sent out a letter to faculty and parents after photos circulating around social media showed two signs that were hung above two water fountains. One sign read, "Whites Only" and the other read "Other".

The signs were handwritten on notebook paper and then taped to the walls above the fountains. Students then took pictures of the signs and posted them on social media. School administrators were notified by students about the signs.

The student responsible was identified and admitted to hanging the signs, stating it was a "joke".

Shaw said that he told the student that the "signs were very offensive and were counter to the culture of inclusion that we support at Roswell."

The student's parents have since been notified according to the principal and appropriate the school is taking disciplinary action for violation of the Fulton County Schools code of conduct.

"I want to apologize for this vulgar display and am disappointed that it occurred," Shaw said. "I can assure the Roswell community that this type of behavior is unacceptable, not only to the leadership at our school but our students as well."

"Throughout my first year at Roswell High, I have seen many examples of how our students respect the rich diversity of our school and care about each other," he added.
