A Coast Guard crew on a drug-searching mission ended up becoming wildlife rescuers in the eastern Pacific.
Last month, the Coast Guard cutter Thetis was investigating a debris field and found an endangered sea turtle tangled up among bundles of drugs.
The turtle had suffered chafing on its neck and flippers.
The crew carefully cut the turtle free. It then confiscated the more than 1,800 pounds of drugs valued at more than $53 million.
The Thetis is home-ported at Key West.
