Volunteers help elderly N.C. tornado victim who hadn't eaten in days

"We came across a friendly neighbor who had been in his home for days. He hadn't eaten for a couple of days. He could barely get to the door," Lowe said.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Volunteers spent Friday and Saturday going door to door to check on neighbors hit by the tornado.

But Madison Lowe with New Jerusalem Cathedral didn’t realize just how badly their help was needed until she knocked on the door of an elderly neighbor

“We came across a friendly neighbor who had been in his home for days. He hadn't eaten for a couple of days. He could barely get to the door,” Lowe said.

The man, who did not want his name used in this story, had been living in his house since the tornado Sunday.

“When we got there it was sort of like the storm really hit inside of his house,” Lowe explained. “There was a hole in his ceiling. The insulation was all over his bed.”

Lowe and her team of volunteers jumped into action. They brought the man a warm meal and groceries. They called Home Depot to assess the damage and make repairs for free.

Lowe hopes everyone in Greensboro will check on their neighbors to make sure they’re okay, especially in areas impacted by the tornado.

“Knock on their doors. Check on your neighbors. Even though the worst of the storm is over, some people are still in a storm,” Lowe said.
