EUSTIS, Fla. -- Police in central Florida arrested an elderly woman accused of trespassing after the independent living facility at which she lived said she refused to pay rent.

Eustis police say Juanita Fitzgerald refused to pay rent for three months. She had to be forcibly removed Tuesday.

Fitzgerald was released Thursday on her own recognizance. A spokesperson for the facility says officials contacted her family several times to try to get her help.

They even reached out to several agencies, including the Homeless Coalition, LiveStream Behavior Center, the United Way of Lake County, Family and Children's Services of Lake County, the Area Agency on Aging and several other apartments and transitional housing programs.

Terri Goldberg lives at the facility and knows Fitzgerald.

“I feel like everything was done that could possibly be done to help her,” said Goldberg. “I feel a lot of this was brought on herself.

“I don't want them to help me,” said Fitzgerald. “I don't need no help. I've got all the help I need.”

“I said if you are going to take me, you are going to have to carry me.”

Friday was Fitzgerald's 94th birthday and she's staying with a friend.
