ATLANTA -- Atlanta's new state-of-the-art Mercedes-Benz Stadium is scheduled to open in 108 days.
Construction delays with the facility's one-of-a-kind, complex retractable roof are behind the date change. But now, the last piece of the steel for the roof’s complicated eight-petal design is in place.
Instead of Atlanta United opening the new $1.5 billion stadium, the Falcons will have that honor the third week of August. And, beyond the Falcons and Atlanta United, the stadium will play host to the College Football National Championship in 2018, the Super Bowl in 2019 and The Final Four in 2020.
11Alive's Melissa Long spoke with the man who leads Arthur Blank’s businesses, which includes the Atlanta Falcons and this massive stadium project.
A little more than a year ago, Steve Cannon, now the CEO of the AMB Group, was the President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA. He was instrumental in the luxury car company’s move from New Jersey to Atlanta.
In an interview with 11Alive, Cannon talks dollars, delays and the Georgia Dome, which is now in the shadow of the new stadium. Cannon also names the next major global sporting event on their radar.
