The Georgia High School Association and Spectra announced Thursday that state high school basketball championships are returning to Macon.

Spectra is the company Bibb County contracts with to run the Macon Coliseum and Macon City Auditorium.

GHSA yanked the state basketball tournament away from Macon last year after it was hosted at the Coliseum for almost 50 years.

The change came after some problems at the 2016 tournament. The issues included basketball goals being improperly placed.

After its one year absence, GHSA basketball is returning with four classifications holding their title games March 7 and 8, 2018. GHSA and Spectra made the announcement at a news conference at the Macon City Auditorium.

To help bring basketball back, Spectra has made some improvements to the venue, they said, including a new floor, new basketball standards and new lights.

The Dual State Wrestling Tournament has been at the Coliseum for many years, but now Traditional Wrestling tournament will also be held there Feb. 8-10, GHSA announced.
