Athlete of the Week: Kennedy Finch

Finch plans on attending Georgia Southern University to major in biology.

The Mary Persons soccer team is having a banner season.

One senior has made it her mission to become a role model on and off the field.

Senior Kennedy Finch made sure she gave herself a leg up in the classroom

"A 4.2 weighted," she said.

That's her grade point average, an "A+" with a smattering of advanced placement courses.

"What has driven me in the classroom through my entire career is just getting into a good school," Kennedy said.

She got into a good school -- Georgia Southern -- but it wasn't her first choice, and that's got her even more fired up.

"This year, unfortunately, I did not get into UGA -- it's getting more and more competitive -- and I think that just motivated me to prove UGA wrong," she said. "My goal is to make the President's List, which is a 4.0. That's one of my main goals."

She wants straight A's in her first semester in college.

That laser focus drive is something she also brings to the soccer team.

"We are 9-2 right now, 5-1 in the region, and we are ranked 9th in the state, so we are having a really good season this year," she said.

But much like her academics, just having a good season isn't enough.

"Our main goal is to just go further than we did last year. Last year, we got stuck in the Sweet Sixteen," she recalled. "This year, we're really set up for a good spot in the brackets this year, so we're really excited to see what's coming forward this season."

Kennedy is a captain, so she feels going all out in class and in practice is just part of the drill.

"I really love the competition in both. I'm a really competitive person, so I enjoy the competitiveness in academics that it takes with your classmates, and I enjoy the competitiveness in soccer as well as competing in with other teams," she said. "I enjoy striving to be the best team that I can be and the best academic student I can be."
