MACON, GA- The Macon Mayhem and Director of Hockey Operations Kevin Kerr announced today that forward Stathis Soumelidis has re-signed for his second season in Macon.
Soumelidis, 23, will be playing his third professional season next year. Prior to last season in Macon, the Brno, Czech Republic native spent time in the SPHL with the Mississippi RiverKings and in the Federal Hockey League with the Berlin River Drivers. Last season, the 6-2, 220-pound winger played 45 regular season games, scoring 10 goals and adding 10 assists. Soumelidis improved his point total from 2 points in 2015-2016 with Mississippi to 20 points last season with Macon. He was also very active in the playoffs, and despite being kept out of the goal column in six playoff games, he was tied with Jake Trask for the most SPHL playoff shots on goal with 31.
“Stathis was one of the most important players on our team last year, and we are thrilled to get him back. When he was playing with Pierog and Summers late in the season, that was maybe our best line and one of the most productive groups in the league,” said Kerr. “He is a big body who does a great job using his size and keeping the game simple. He improved drastically from his first season in the league, and we expect him to continue to progress this upcoming year.”
