Last week, we introduced you to volleyball standout Tatyana Robinson. Today, we give you someone to cheer about.
Break out the pom-poms for this week's 'Athlete of the Week.'
On Friday nights in Central Georgia, most eyes from the stands are focused on the players on the field, but it's no doubt your ears are focused on these athletes.
Coach Michelle Bacchus says, "Cheerleading is definitely a sport. The girls work so hard day in and day out, just like football and soccer and all other team sports."
Minx Damron is one of those athletes. In addition to sideline cheerleading, the junior is also involved in competitive cheerleading, cross-country, track and field, and soccer. Because of this extensive list of athletic participation, Minx has been selected as our 'Athlete of the Week.'
"We go to cheerleading camp every summer and everyday this week and everyday this summer," says Minx.
"They do gymnastics every week and perfect their tumbling skills. You have to have a lot of endurance to be a cheerleader," Coach Bacchus says.
Minx is also an honor student, which gives her coach something to cheer about.
"I definitely think Minx is a role model to kids. She's an honor student. She has a wonderful attitude. It shows in her time with me and her time in the classroom. I think if you asked any of her teachers, they would say she is a wonderful student and a great role model for every student at Tattnall," says Bacchus.
Damron says, "I want them to see that sports is important, but its also important in the classroom."
So next time you are at a ball game, when you are celebrating a touchdown, you may notice the other athletes who are working just as hard as the ones on the field and cheer them on as well.
Minx has a busy sporting schedule for the rest of the year, but out of all of them, she says competition cheerleading is her favorite. Thursday night, she is going to help cheer on the Trojans as they face Westfield on the road.
