For this week's honoree we head to the grid iron to find a record breaking fullback from Forsyth--Rico Lyons.
Even though Rico Lyons has a twin brother Reno, Coach Rodney Walker says his starting fullback is one of a kind.
"He starting to develop", says Walker. "He's talented but he surprised me, he showed me some moves last Friday that I didn't even know he had."
Rico arrived at Mary Persons last year in the middle of the season, but always had dreams of starting for the Bulldogs.
This past off season his dreams started to take shape. Walker says, "In the spring he was playing slotback but about the fifth day of practice we moved him over to fullback. He's a good team player. He works hard and has a good attitude."
Rico Lyons, adds "I was nervous going in as starting fullback but I was ready to run the ball because I had practiced for so long."
All their life the Lyons twins wanted to be Bulldogs. But never in his life did Rico think during his first game he would break a school record with 274 yards rushing.
Rico Lyons says, "I wanna run at least 300 yards, it starts by running hard in practice, and running behind my blocks and get them ready too."
Lyons also boasts a 2.9 GPA in the classroom as a junior, and hopes to improve on his grades as well.
Rico gives credit to his teachers and family for supporting him along the way and says it can only get better from here. His coach agrees. "He has the right perspective", says Walker, "which I really like about him. He realizes the team concept and he knows if he is successful our offense is successful because our offense is built around that fullback."
Rico and the Mary Persons Bulldogs take on Veterans Friday night, the first week of September at Dan Pitts Stadium.
