TAMPA, Fla. (WTSP)-- The days of Facebook as we know it are numbered.

The social media site has announced that all profiles must switch over to the new timeline layout in the next few weeks. That has some users fearing their pasts may come back to haunt them.

"This is just making it more obvious of something you might have said that you regretted or was silly," said Alexandria Lott, a senior at the University of South Florida.

The timeline is designed to make it much easier to pull up photos from years ago.

That may not seem like a big deal, but if you're 25 and working now, you might not want your friends to see what you posted while in college.

"It was fine the way it was," Lott said.

Switching to the timeline isn't going to instantly make your photos or videos public, but there are steps you can take to make them even more private. 10 News Web Producer Dan Trotter says the easiest thing to do is go into privacy settings and find the "Limit the audience for past posts" tab.

Under the custom tag, you can choose which of your friends to hide certain things from. That means if you don't want a new boss or co-worker to see your crazy college days, you can block them from that era.

"Once you touch your settings, you'll be able to control the privacy a lot better now than you would before," Trotter explained.

Other users, though, say while they were hesitant to switch, after a few weeks they were sold on the timeline.

"I like the way it looks," said Caleb Vance. "Easy to keep track of who did what, when."

Facebook has not announced an official date for when everyone has to change to the new format.

Experts also advise changing your settings so that you're notified any time someone tags you in a photo, video, or post. That way you have the option to block it.
