Drinking allowed at growler shops

More good news for beer growler lovers.

Macon-Bibb county commissioners unanimously approved an ordinance Tuesday night that allows you to drink those beverages in-store.

A growler is a 32- or 64-ounce reusable glass jug that you can fill with your favorite craft beer.

When you've finished the jug, you can bring it back to the store, get it sanitized, and refill it.

Before, you were only allowed to sample a few different beers and couldn't drink inside the stores.

But now, you've got the green light inside any county shop licensed to sell growlers.

Mayor Robert Reichert says he doesn't think it's a risky decision.

"It's still going to be subject to an open container, so you can't walk out with it as an open container," Reichert said. "The growler is sealed so it's no different than anything else. It doesn't cause me any concern."

Reichert says this was the most logical decision after commissioners approved growler sales in Macon-Bibb a few months ago.

The county also approved more than $104,000 for new furniture for the tax commissioner's office.

The new office will be on Walnut Street instead of at the Bibb County courthouse.

Reichert says this will allow the tax assessor and his staff to do their jobs more effectively.
