Sweet potato pie is a sacred food for many in the south. It's one of those dishes served throughout the year during holidays, celebrations and common Sunday dinners.
The recipes are varied and but carry similar ingredients like sweet potatoes (duh), various spices, vanilla extract, sugar, crust, etc. But, a recipe video on Facebook threw nearly all of that out the window.
Cooking Panda posted a recipe video for a stuffed sweet potato pie with ingredients like evaporated milk, eggs, "dark sugar," butter AND shredded parmesan cheese.
The video has more than a million views and the comments section is blowing up with outrage and disgust.
One man said called it a travesty.
Another person said it wasn't a pie at all.
The jokes are relentless.
But the anger is real...some are calling for an apology from Cooking Panda
According to their Facebook page, Cooking Panda is a company based out of Los Angeles. That might explain why this recipe is drastically different from sweet potato pies of the south.
Vice President of content Alex Groberman said in an email that the recipe came from a contributor and that they "we really appreciated the unconventional spin she put on a classic dish."
He went on to day they're used to getting "very enthusiastic feedback across multiple platforms," and encourage it.
