FORT STEWART, Ga. (AP) -- Fort Stewart's top general says soldiers under his command and their families aren't surprised to see some units being deployed to Afghanistan after spending nearly eight years focused on the Iraq war.
Maj. Gen. Robert A. Abrams told reporters Thursday it made sense for the Pentagon to tap his 700-soldier headquarters battalion for a yearlong tour in Afghanistan because the same troops had trained for a final Iraq deployment last fall, but were kept home because of the pending U.S. withdrawal.
The deployment announced Thursday marks the second time in the past month the Army has issued orders to send Fort Stewart units to Afghanistan. A total of 2,200 troops are scheduled to deploy by the end of the summer.
