Eighth District congressman Austin Scott (R-Ashburn) laid the blame for proposed defense cuts at the feet of President Obama.
In a statement issued by his congressional office, Scott said: "Americans want a strong national defense and the President continues to ignore that.
"The President is out of touch with that fact and the reality of the current threats around the world, including Iran."
Scott said Obama is ignoring "the root" of our economic problems: entitlement spending.
Instead, he said, "the President continues to insist on cutting funding for the men and women who protect our personal freedoms" and would "put as many as 100,000 service personnel in the unemployment line."
"I intend to fight his decision every step of the way."
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Thursday the administration plans to cut 100,000 ground forces over five years, part of a plan to cut future defense spending by almost 500 billion dollars over the next decade. He said the President would also seek a new round of base closings.
Scott said he would use his seat on the House Armed Services Committee's Subcommittee on Readiness to protect Robins Air Force Base.
He said he was confident that the Robins community would work together " to ensure that Robins AFB remains an integral part of Georgia's economy and our national defense for a very long time."
