FORT STEWART, Ga. (AP) - Commanders of the 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart are headed to Afghanistan.

The Savannah Morning News reports (http://bit.ly/Ng9KRJ) that a ceremony was held at the fort on Wednesday as members of the 3rd Infantry Division headquarters element prepared for deployment.

Maj. Gen. Robert Abrams said he was honored to lead his soldiers as they embark on the beginning of what he said will be a new "chapter in the division's history." This will be their first deployment to Afghanistan.

After spearheading the invasion into Iraq in 2003, the 3rd Infantry headquarters deployed to that country three additional times. No other U.S. Army division headquarters has deployed as often.

Abrams and the Division Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion next month will take full responsibility for the International Security Assistance Force's Regional Command-South.
