Five Macon-Bibb commissioners were among the Georgia officials who attended a Tuesday White House briefings on ways President Trump's administration can better serve local governments.

Commissioner Gary Bechtel, chairman of the Operations and Finance Committee, said 70 commissioners from around the state attended the meeting. Bechtel said Vice President Mike Pence briefly addressed the Georgia delegation.

Georgia's own Sonny Perdue, Secretary of Agriculture and a former governor. Perdue made the opening remarks, Bechtel said. Another Georgian, Nick Ayers, also addressed the group. Ayers serves as Pence's chief of staff.

Other speakers included representatives from the Small Business Administration, Departments of Transportation, Health and Human Services, Homeland Security, Energy and Education and Housing and Urban Development.

Georgia's junior U.S. Senator David Perdue also addressed the group.

"It was a good day," Bechtel said. "The main theme was proactive to reach out to local governments."

Bechtel said administration officials gave the local delegations business cards with contact information on them. "We're really plugged in with the administration," he said.

Other Macon-Bibb commissioners attending the meeting were Mallory Jones, Larry Schlesinger, Al Tillman and Virgil Watkins.
