Fort Valley State University has fired its men's basketball coach after an 8-21 season.
A news release from the school Tuesday reported that Athletic Director Percy Caldwell fired coach John Douglas in a morning meeting.
"After an assessment of the past two years of the men's basketball program, it has become patently clear that we must take our program in a different direction," Caldwell said, according to a news release. "We are grateful to coach Douglas for the service he has provided and wish him success in future endeavors."
The Wildcats finished the 2010-'11 regular season at 8-20, then lost their opening game in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament. It's the second year in a row they were eliminated in the opening round.
Douglas' two-year record was 17-40 overall and 15-33 in the conference.
Fort Valley says its search for a new coach will begin immediately.
