The death of a civilian aircraft mechanic at Robins Air Force Base Thursday morning was an apparent suicide by gunshot, the Houston County coroner said.

Coroner Danny Galpin said the victim was a 51-year-old Fort Valley man.

Although the autopsy has not been performed yet, Galpin says his preliminary opinion is that the gunshot was self-inflicted.

"We have no reason to believe it was anything other than a suicide," he said.

Galpin said he had no further details on the circumstances.

13WMAZ normally does not report suicides, except in unusual circumstances. We are reporting this death because it happened on the Air Force base, but are withholding the victim's name.

Base spokeswoman Chrissy Miner says the man was injured on the base and later died off-base this morning, but she could not release further details.

She said the victim was a mechanic with the 402nd Maintenance Wing.

The base news release does not state where the man was injured or how. Miner says the cause of death is still under investigation.
