Roddy Nixon, a meteorology technician with Robins Air Force Base, says their relief efforts during the Americus tornado made them want to become a storm ready community.
"The main focus we wanted to initiate here at Robins is to help our National Weather Service partners, help our Emergency Management partners spread the word about safety and awareness and preparedness," says Nixon.
Their efforts paid off. The National Weather Service recognized Robins Thursday, making them the only StormReady military institution in the state.
Nixon says their staff is highly trained and they're equipped to travel to any part of the world, set up their gear and instruments, and start delivering full forecasts within 24 hours of their arrival.
That's one of the reasons they were recognized as StormReady. Barry Gooden, Warning Coordinator for the National Weather Service, says most counties have the ability to be storm ready. They just have to prove it.
"The program is really just a matter of listing what your capabilities are in the county. It's really not hard. Having ways to monitor the weather, having ways to disseminate the information out to the community and having ways of doing programs to let people know what to do when storms occur," explains Gooden.
Bibb county is also StormReady and Gooden hopes the base will encourage other communities to get certified.
"I would like to see all ninety-six of my counties StormReady and by having this opportunity now i'm hoping that there will be more in the Middle Georgia area," says Gooden.
"It shows our community that we are serious about preparing and we want to be part of that effort to save lives." explains Nixon.
Businesses in a county that is StormReady can also be certified as StormReady Supporters. To learn how you can be StormReady visit the National Weather Service's website: http://www.stormready.noaa.gov/howto.htm
